Language Material

Language is the most powerful instrument of human progress

Language Material

A child’s language development begins even before they enter the classroom as they are constantly shaped by their outside experiences from family and the world around them. Our educators continue to guide children as they begin to incorporate their spoken and written skills and help them apply such skills in an effective and functional manner.

In our Montessori environment, spoken language is a foundation of literacy. Songs, stories, poems, language cards and I spy game all help build the child’s vocabulary through rich oral language experiences. Children are introduced to the sound of letters (phonetics) which leads to an awareness that words are made up of sounds. Creating words by putting sounds/symbols together to create words is the first step in preparing the mind for writing.

Once this preparation has been met, just as we cannot make an infant take his first steps, spontaneously the child will decode the sounds/symbols and decipher words. Through repetition and experience, children soon develop confidence in their writing and speaking skills as they form a firm grasp of using language materials.

What Is Montessori Language Learning?

In a Montessori School, children are given the freedom to discover their own language. Learning a language is a social interaction and one that can be nurtured in a specially designed Montessori classroom.

Children are more motivated to learn to read, write and communicate when it has meaning in their daily life. In a Montessori classroom, teachers will be able to curate and prepare the child’s learning environment for language development. They can incorporate lots of stimuli and specific educational materials to make the environment rich for language learning.

In the Montessori Language curriculum, children are encouraged to develop their own language skills. They’re taught phonics (letter sounds), how to identify a letter, how sounds make words and how to properly build a sentence. There’s also plenty of group time so children can practise what they’ve learned through social interactions with other children.

Montessori Language Activities

Montessori Language materials and activities are designed to build upon the skills children have learned in other areas of the curriculum. They give the child a sensorial impression of language and how it works.

By introducing fun and engaging activities, children can expand their vocabulary and learn word and sentence structure.

Example activities include:

  • Sandpaper Letters (which use the sense of touch to learn letter shapes)
  • Sound Pouches
  • Matching Objects and Pictures
  • Songs and Stories
  • Three Part Cards

Montessori classrooms are designed to be rich in sensory objects that children can use to develop their language skills.

Once this preparation has been met, just as we cannot make an infant take his first steps, spontaneously the child will decode the sounds/symbols and decipher words. Through repetition and experience, children soon develop confidence in their writing and speaking skills as they form a firm grasp of using language materials.

Why Are Montessori Language Activities Important

Language is the gateway for children to be able to communicate with others and understand their environment. When Montessori Language materials are used, children are able to begin to describe and interact with objects and people around them. They can learn new concepts, how to socially interact and to label objects.

When a child is given the freedom to explore language and discover it for themselves, they’ll be more likely to continue reading and learning.
